Pediatric eye exams in Clear Lake

Gentle, unhurried pediatric eye exams for kids in Clear Lake

For children from age 4 to 5, with a doctor who takes the time - not a quick line at a screening table.

Eye Trends is a full-service one-stop Clear Lake optometry practice - comprehensive and medical eye exams, contact lenses, and designer eyewear under one roof - led by Dr. Jerry Hyder, OD, a Clear Lake fixture for 42 years. Bring your child in for a real, patient exam, and we will check how clearly they see and how their eyes change as they grow.

The problem hides

A young child can't tell you what they can't see

Blurry is normal to a child who has never seen any other way, so a vision problem rarely shows up as "I can't see." It shows up as squinting, sitting too close to the screen, headaches after homework, losing their place when they read, or getting restless and "acting up" in class. A quick school line-screening, or a rushed check at a big-box counter, is easy to pass and can still miss all of it.

We built this practice for Clear Lake and Bay Area families who want thorough, personal care rather than a rushed screening. So we take the time to look at the whole picture, not just the top line of the chart.

What you get

What your child actually gets

Not a fast line at a screening table. An early, thorough read, a calm visit at your child's pace, and a family home base for every kid in the house.

01

An early, thorough read

We check how clearly your child sees, and whether both eyes are working together the way they should - the things a distance-only screening was never built to catch.

02

A calm visit, at a kid's pace

We move at the speed of the child in the chair. Plain language, patient pacing, and no rushing a nervous five-year-old, so even a first-timer leaves comfortable.

03

A family home base

We are open Saturdays from 9 to 1, so a visit doesn't cost a school day, and every kid in the house can come here for exams, contact lenses, and glasses, year after year.

Inside the exam

What a pediatric exam covers here

A pediatric exam at Eye Trends is a real, careful look, sized to your child's age. For pre-readers, we use picture and matching charts instead of letters. Dr. Hyder checks how well the eyes focus, team together, and track a moving target, along with depth and color vision, and he takes a refraction to measure a glasses prescription if one is needed. He also looks at your child's overall eye health.

You also walk out with a school-vision screening you can use for school and sports forms. And for a child who is becoming nearsighted, we offer myopia management using atropine or multifocal lenses to help slow the change while their eyes are still growing. Anything that calls for care we don't provide here, we refer to a trusted specialist rather than over-promise.

Why families trust us

Why Clear Lake families trust us with their kids

Dr. Hyder has cared for Clear Lake families for 42 years, since 1984. Some of the children he first examined now sit in the waiting room with their own kids - the "I was 12 when I first came to you" kind of relationship you build only by staying put and being the same doctor every visit. We are not going to quote you a made-up number; the proof is 42 years of families who keep coming back, and now bring the next generation.

Not a fast screening

A fast screening, or an exam that follows your child

At a big-box counter or a rotating-roster group, your child sees whoever happens to be on shift that day, gets a fast screening and a coupon, and no one is watching how their vision shifts from one year to the next.

Here, your child gets the full exam, and we follow their eyes as they grow - so we notice the squinting you mentioned last fall, and the small change since the last visit. That continuity is the difference between a one-time snapshot and a real record of how your child sees.

Common questions

Straight answers before you book

How old should my child be for a first exam?

We see children from about age 4 to 5. If you have a question about a younger child, call us at (281) 488-0066 and we'll help you decide when the time is right.

Isn't the school screening enough?

A school screening is a fast distance check, and it's a helpful early flag - but it flags less than a full exam. It can miss focusing problems, eye-teaming issues, and eye-health concerns. A full pediatric exam looks at all of it.

Is it covered by insurance?

Many vision plans include a child's exam. We accept most vision and medical plans, including VSP, EyeMed, Superior, Aetna, BCBS, Medicare, Cigna, and Tricare. Coverage varies by plan, so call (281) 488-0066 and we'll help you check yours before the visit.

What if my child needs more than glasses?

If they're becoming nearsighted, we offer myopia management with atropine or multifocal lenses. We don't run therapy programs or eye-exercise programs here, and for anything outside what we do, we'll point you to the right specialist or co-manage the care with them.

Still have a question about your child's eyes? Call (281) 488-0066 and talk to a real person.
